Closing the Gender Pay Gap: Why Pay Equity has Stalled in New York City and the Urgent Need for Action is being co-released by the Center for New York City Affairs and Women Creating Change (WCC). The report finds that 60 years after passage of the federal Equal Pay Act, women of all ages and in all fields still earn less than men, and crucially, progress closing that gap has slowed over the past 25 years, including in New York City. Detailing the factors driving this pay gap, including discrimination, either outright or as a result of social norms, this report shows how women are disproportionately represented in lower-paid sectors with less flexibility and greater scheduling demands, such as home health aides, childcare, and other human services work, positions that have been increasing in recent years.
